FOOD FROM plants

It is the largest  single food  item used throughout the world. Almost everyone in the world eats some kind of bread . But all bread - sweet or sour, brown or white, heavy or light- is made  from flour, and all flour comes  from  grain. We often eat cooked rice, oats, corn, and  other grain. Food  processors make  products  such  as  macaroni, spaghetti, and breakfast  cereals from grain. Distillers and brewers use grain to make such beverages as whisky and beer.

Vegetables and  fruits come from several parts of  plants. Eat  the roots of  beets, carrots, and sweet potatoes , and the leaves of  cabbage, lettuce, and spinach. Other popular  foods include the stems of  asparagus, the stalks of celery, the bulbs  of onions, and the flowers of  cauliflower and broccoli. The common white potato comes from the part of the potato plant, called  the tuber, that  grows underground.

Many plants produce fruits that we eat.

Some of  these fruits such as cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes , we call vegetables or vegetable fruits.

Others, such as apples, berries, figs, lemons , olives, and oranges, we call simply fruits.

Certain trees produce dry fruits that we call nuts. Other foods from various parts of  plants include spices, sugar , cocoa , coffee, tea and various vegetable oils.
