Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts, the microscopic green organelles inside the cells of green plant tissue, especially leaves.

During photosynthesis, a plant uses the energy in sunlight to carry out a chain of chemical reactions. It makes the food substance glucose, which is the energy source for the whole plant, from molecules of carbon dioxide and water.

Oxygen is formed as a by-product.

Photosynthesis is vital to life on Earth, since all animals are indirectly or indirectly dependent on plants for food.
